In Benin the management of Edo State owned Ambrose Alli
University, Ekpoma yesterday, closed the institution following violent protests by students of the institution.

Vanguard reported that the protest was triggered by the increment in tuition fees by the management of the institution.

A statement by the institution’s Public Relations Officer,
Edward Aihevbe, said the decision to close the institution
indefinitely was reached after the university’s senate reviewed the students’ protest.

He said the senate viewed the protest as uncalled for as the
students barricaded the Benin-Ekpoma-Auchi highway.

He denied social media report that two students were shot by security agents and said the students were given until 4pm to vacate the institution.

His words: “No student was shot. They barricaded the
highway and soldiers escorting an Army vehicle that was
passing the highway had to fire into the air to scare the
protesters away.”
